FAQs

What is microcement?

Microcement is a resin-based coating used to create seamless finishes on floors, walls, and other surfaces. It is hand-applied with a trowel and is a versatile and durable material that can be applied in various colours and textures to suit different design aesthetics.

How long does microcement last?

When installed and maintained properly, microcement is highly durable and can last for many years. It’s resistant to wear, stains, and cracks, making it a long-lasting solution for both residential and commercial spaces.

Is microcement easy to clean and maintain?

Microcement is relatively low-maintenance. Regular cleaning with a neutral pH cleaner and avoiding harsh chemicals will keep it looking great. Periodic resealing can further extend its longevity and rejuvenate the surface.

Is microcement environmentally friendly?

Yes, microcement is considered eco-friendly because it uses fewer raw materials and doesn’t require major demolition during installation. Its longevity and durability also reduce the need for replacements, making it a sustainable choice.

HOW MUCH DOES MICROCEMENT COST?

Factors such as location, details required, and chosen finish can influence the price of a microcement installation. Typically, microcement can cost anywhere between £130-£170+VAT per square meter.

What surfaces can microcement be applied to?

Microcement can be applied to a wide range of surfaces, including screeds, cement boards, tiles, wood, plaster, and even existing floors or walls. It’s ideal for both new builds and renovations.

Can microcement be customised in colour and texture?

Yes, microcement is highly customisable. It can be finished in a wide variety of colours and textures, from smooth and polished to more textured or rustic finishes, allowing you to create a unique look tailored to your space. We offer a standard range of colours but can also closely match popular paint brands such as Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Dulux, and RAL.

Microcement finishes we offer:

CoarseHighly durable, large grain, rustic stone finish. Suitable for high-traffic walls, floors, and bathrooms. It can be heavily sanded so that it is smooth to the touch or lightly sanded to aid non-slip properties.

MediumUnderstated, simplistic finish with subtle tones and minimal movement. It can be hand-floated to produce our signature cloudy finish. Suitable for medium-traffic walls, floors, and bathrooms.

Trowel-X – Extremely durable, power-floated concrete effect finish with a Mohs hardness rating of 7, which is comparable to Quartz stone. It can be finished with a matt sealer or diamond polished to achieve a polished concrete look. FOR FLOORS ONLY.

Can microcement be used outdoors?

Yes, microcement is suitable for outdoor applications as well. Thanks to its resin-based formula, it is 100% waterproof before sealers are applied. It is weather-resistant and can be used on patios, terraces, and external walls, providing a seamless and contemporary finish to outdoor spaces.

IS MICROCEMENT COMPATIBLE WITH UNDERFLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS?

Yes, microcement is compatible with most wet and dry UFH systems. It is best to check with your installer beforehand to see if your chosen system is suitable and what substrate preparation they recommend.

CAN MICROCEMENT BE REPAIRED?

Due to the seamless nature of microcement, it can be difficult to patch in or repair large areas without being noticeable, even when using the same product and colour as the damaged area. If using a reputable brand of microcement, damage is unlikely to occur with general use.

Is microcement waterproof?

Yes, our chosen brand of microcement (Forcrete) is resin-based, meaning it is 100% waterproof and stain-resistant, making it a perfect choice for wet areas such as bathrooms, wet rooms, kitchens, and even steam rooms.

Traditional microcements, which are cementitious and polymer-based, rely on a polyurethane sealer to keep them waterproof. These sealers can deteriorate over a short period of time, allowing water to enter the surface and resulting in water damage and delamination.

How long does it take to apply microcement?

The time required depends on the size of the area and the complexity of the project, but typically, the application process takes between 5 to 7 days, including drying and sealing time.

How thick is microcement when applied?

Microcement is applied in thin layers, typically between 2 to 3 mm, which makes it an excellent option for renovation projects, as it doesn’t significantly increase the thickness of the surface.

WHAT MICROCEMENT BRAND IS THE BEST TO USE?

We exclusively use Forcrete microcement products, which are some of the best on the market for durability, performance, and look. Thanks to their resin-based formula, liquid physically cannot absorb into the surface, making it 100% waterproof before sealers are applied. This also means it has to go through a curing process, resulting in a highly durable and impact-resistant finish.

DOES MICROCEMENT CRACK?

Microcement will never crack on its own and will only follow the substrate below. It is essential to correctly prepare areas receiving Microcment to ensure the longevity of the surface. Reputable installers will take all the possible steps to mitigate the chance of cracking, such as recommending a solid and suitable substrate build-up, installing a fibreglass mesh undercoat, running UFH systems before the installation, and installing expansion gaps under doors and at necessary pinch points to redirect any movement.

MICROCEMENT VS. TRADITIONAL FLOORING

Microcement and traditional flooring options each have their own unique advantages and considerations. Here’s a comparison to help you decide which might be best for your needs:

Microcement

  • Durability: Highly durable, resistant to wear, scratches, and stains when properly sealed.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Offers a sleek, contemporary finish that can mimic polished concrete or marble.

  • Installation: Can be applied directly over existing floors, making it a versatile option for renovations.

  • Maintenance: Easy to maintain with a pH-neutral cleaning fluid; avoid harsh chemicals.

  • Waterproof: Resin-based Microcements are fully waterproof before sealers are applied and suitable for wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens.

  • Thickness: Applied in thin layers (2-3mm), making it lightweight and suitable for various spaces.

  • Cost: Generally the same price as high-end traditional flooring options.

Traditional Flooring Options

  • Hardwood: Timeless and elegant, but can be susceptible to scratches and water damage if not maintained properly.

  • Tiles: Highly durable and water-resistant, but can crack upon impact and require grout lines which can collect dirt.

  • Carpet: Comfortable and warm, but tends to show wear and tear quickly, especially in high-traffic areas, and can be harder to clean.

  • Ceramic or Porcelain Tiles: Excellent for wet areas, but can be cold underfoot and may crack with heavy impacts.

  • Vinyl: Affordable and easy to install, but not as durable as other options and can be prone to scratches.

Ultimately, the choice between microcement and traditional flooring depends on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. Microcement offers a modern, low-maintenance solution with a sleek finish, while traditional options provide a range of styles and textures to suit different tastes and requirements.
